Background & Credentials

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Pure Mathematics from the University of North Carolina Asheville, with a minor concentration in Data Science. In 2026 I received the Outstanding Citizenship Award from the Mathematics and Statistics Department at UNCA — an immense honor that I hope to live up to.

What I Teach

I work with students from middle school through early college in algebra, geometry, calculus, linear algebra, and statistics, as well as in an introduction to proof-based mathematics and general computer and data science literacy.

My research interests are in Applied & Interdisciplinary Mathematics, with a focus on Mathematical Biology. In general, I am drawn to modeling the natural world and to using mathematics as a means for science communication. I think teaching is an integral part of learning, and naturally that is the course for the profession of a scholar.

That being said, I have a passion for the subject as a whole and how it helps one relate to other disciplines. I want to make mathematics more accessible to everyone, and my interest is in helping students develop strong foundations. I know first hand how much one's community can impact long term success, how one friend can make a world of difference, and that's what I want to be, a guide and companion, as tutors were in the classical sense.

Tutoring

If you're a student at UNCA, I'd encourage you first and foremost to make use of the Math Lab — it's an excellent resource, and the community there is the best. If you're looking for something more personal, I'd be glad to hear from you.

When you reach out, I'll get back to you to learn a bit more about your goals and where you're starting from. Then, I'll send a link to schedule a time that works for you.

I want you to feel like this time is a good investment throughout. To make this service accessible, our first session is without cost, and I adopt a pay-what-you-want model. My suggested rates are as follows: in-person $55/hr and online $45/hr. I based these rates on the current market value for someone with my experience, and I understand that the pay-what-you-want format comes with its challenges, but principally I want to reduce barriers, build trust, and work on some math!

A standard session runs about an hour. We'll start by checking in on what's come up since we last met (homework, an upcoming test, a concept that didn't quite click) and set a clear goal for the time together. Most of the session is spent working through problems side by side: sometimes that means slowing down on a single idea until it's solid, sometimes it means building fluency. Before we finish, I'll leave you with a short, specific plan (e.g. a few problems or a concept to revisit) so the work continues productively between sessions.
